We purchased our first 2 llamas in 2000 after moving to the country and hearing the coyotes howling in the night. We had 2 small dogs and wanted them to be safe. The Llamas were recommended to us by our vet. Now our herd consists of 21 llamas and one suri alpaca. Our alpaca was gelded as soon as we brought him to our farm and he serves as the uncle to the llamas as they go through the weaning process.
Llamas find their way into our lives due to the fact that they are gentle, very social, clean and graceful. They can be found visiting schools, nursing homes, and hospitals. They can be featured in parades and showing their "stuff" in llama shows. Other llamas are found in the mountins carrying their owners camping and hiking gear. Many golf courses welcome llamas as caddys due their gentleness on the land. llamas are everywhere and baring joy to all they come in contact with.
You ask, "What do you do with all those llamas?" First and foremost, we love each and every one of our "kids". Just like our children, each llama has his or her own personality. Some love back scratches, others want their neck scratched, many want to give kisses and a couple just want to watch us.
We participate in llama shows in the mid-west and have been proud to take our llamas into the show ring and leave with numerous awards. Some of our females have qualified for the Grand National Show in Lincoln, Nebraska. In 2001, King Cole placed in the top 10 in the male, heavy wool male category.
Our breeding goals are for size, genetic correctness, conformation, gentle temperament and award-winning fiber. All llamas purchased from Bright Stars Llamas come with complete health papers. We welcome you to tour our farm and meet our loving animals.
After our first shearing, I stood and looked at all that fiber and wondered what on earth is a person to do with all this "wool?" As a result, I've learned to spin, knit and best of all ‘wet felt.’ From the passion of felting came a new business called FiberAntics. You can learn more about FiberAntics by visiting our website.
